As the largest historical residential neighborhood in Washington DC, Capitol Hill is home to our nation's capital buildings and prestigious homes and residences. East of Penn Quarter and West of the Boundary Channel, Capitol Hill overlooks the National Mall with historical buildings and homes set atop the hill. Capitol Hill is the term many use to describe both the historic district and the surrounding area. It is generally defined as the area from the Anacostia River on the east to the National Mall on the west, the H Street Corridor on the north to the Southeast/Southwest Freeway and Washington Navy Yard on the south. The neighborhood sits on two quadrants, the Southeast and the Northeast.
Capitol Hill is unique in the area because it not only represents a residential neighborhood, but because here you will find all of the national government buildings you've heard about since childhood. Whether it is the United States Capitol Building, the Supreme Court Building, the Library of Congress or the Marine Barracks, Capitol Hill is brimming with history and culture.
The residential neighborhood is largely made up of row houses from a variety of architectural periods. The styles vary widely and the historic feel of the entire area is unmistakable. There is a vibrant commercial district with restaurants, shops and bars abounding.
There is a vibrant community here and a highlight of the area is the Annual 4th of July Parade. The Eastern Market (featuring food, crafts and music) is a local favorite and runs through the summer months from its 7th Street location.
